Calendar and Weather

A part of our daily schedule is calendar and weather time. The class gathers together to report today's date and weather. We also practice days of the week, months of the year, patterns, and counting. We also use this time for an excuse to get up and sing and dance! Our conclusion to calendar time is to sing songs from one of our favorite CDs, Dr. Jean and Friends. We sing "Days of the Week," "Macarena Months," and "Weather Song."

Students practice calendar skills individually during Math Centers by using their Calendar Binders. This idea came from another teacher. Her name is Jessica Meacham and this is her fabulous site. I changed a couple things to fit our needs.

You can help your child by frequently using calendar vocabulary at home. "Today is Monday and it is the second day of the week." "Today is Friday, it is your last day of school for the week." Students often have trouble with before and after. You can help them by practicing at home, "Sunday comes before Monday. Tuesday comes after Monday." Remember to use this idea with months, too! "April comes before May. March comes before April. June comes after May." Have your child teach our calendar songs to you. You can sing them together!
