Behavior Management
It is very important to me to treat each student in the room with respect. In return, I ask and expect respect from the students. I prefer positive discipline rather than negative. When one focuses on the positive, students are given a better chance to be successful. If one focuses on the negative, it sets the tone in the room in a negative fashion. Children are eager to please and eager to do well! I use various tools to monitor student behavior.
Behavior Chart
In our classroom we have a behavior chart. Each student has following: green, yellow, orange, red, and purple cards. If a student is breaking a rule, they will receive a warning. If the behavior continues, they will pull a card. Students are given every opportunity to reflect on their behavior. If after they pulled a card, they can earn their way back to green. Why? Children have a short attention span. It is unfair to expect them to be 100% perfect all day. Children are eager to please and one mistake shouldn't ruin their day. However, if a child reaches an orange card, they may NOT go back. My philosophy behind this is simply that the student has been given every opportunity to correct their behavior. If it continues, the last card will be pulled and there will be a phone call. Consequences will be given for various actions. I do not have a certain consequence for each color card because I believe the consequence should relate to the action. For example, if a child disrupts a lesson (even after being warned), they will be asked to sit by themeself for 5 minutes. If a child is not getting along with others on recess, they must play by themeselves for a period of time, and so on.
If a child is having an excellent day, making good choices, showing kindness and respect, they will be asked to switch their GREEN card to purple. A child may only have a chance to go to purple if they are on green. If they are on purple, they will get 2 stamps in their stamp book. If a chid is on green, they will get 1 stamp. Children will also color their behavior calendar the appropriate color for that day. If a child is on yellow, orange, or red, I ask that a parent initial the day. An explanation will be in your child's STAR Binder in the "notes" section.
Stamp Book
Each child has a stamp book. Stamps are earned by being on green or purple. Students may also earn stamps throughout the school day for good choices and positive behavior. When a child earns 5 stamps, they may go to the treasure chest. When a child fills a page in their stamp book, they are added to the lunch club. The lunch club gets to have lunch with me in the classroom or outside on the picnic tables.
Cool Cub Cards
We have a school wide positive discipline system known as "Cool Cub Cards." Students may earn a Cool Cub Card by following school rules and procedures. These cards are given out by teachers, teacher assistant, vice principal, and the principal. When a child earns 5 Cool Cub Cards, they visit the school treasure box. I will also add the student to the lunch club for earning 5 Cool Cub Cards.
Compliment Chart
Each classroom has a Complment Chart. Every time the class earns a compliment from a faculy member, it is added to the chart. When the chart is full (20 compliments), the class will have a small celebration. More information on these celebrations will be sent home as they are earned.
