Classroom Management
It is very important to me to treat each student in the room with respect. In return, I ask and expect respect from the students. I prefer positive discipline rather than negative. When one focuses on the positive, students are given a better chance to be successful. If one focuses on the negative, it sets the tone in the room in a negative fashion. Children are eager to please and eager to do well! I use various tools to monitor student behavior.
Behavior ChartIn our classroom we have a behavior chart. Instead of the common pulling card system, our chart works on moving colors based on POSITIVE behavior. All students start off on green. For positive behavior, such as being helpful, being a good listener, etc- students can move their colors to earn extra rewards. Depending on the color, students will get 1 - 3 stamps in their stamp book. If a student is breaking a rule, they will receive a warning. If the behavior continues, they will move their color off of green. Students are given every opportunity to reflect on their behavior. If the students improves their behavior after moving a color, they can earn their way back to green. Why? Children have a short attention span. It is unfair to expect them to be 100% perfect all day. Children are eager to please and one mistake shouldn't ruin their day. However, if a child reaches the red section of the chart, they may NOT go back. My philosophy behind this is simply that the student has been given every opportunity to correct their behavior. If moved to red, a phone call will be made home. Consequences will be given for various actions. I do not have a certain consequence for each color card because I believe the consequence should relate to the action. For example, if a child disrupts a lesson (even after being warned), they will be asked to sit by themeself for 5 minutes. If a child is not getting along with others on recess, they must play by themeselves for a period of time, and so on.

Lunch ClubIf a child is on green, pink, or purple all week they will be in the Lunch Club on Friday. Lunch Club eats lunch with Miss Chapple in the room or outside on the picnic benches.
Cool Cub CardsWe have a school wide positive discipline system known as "Cool Cub Cards." Students may earn a Cool Cub Card by following school rules and procedures. These cards are given out by teachers, teacher assistant, vice principal, and the principal. When a child earns 5 Cool Cub Cards, they visit the school treasure box. I will also add the student to the lunch club for earning 5 Cool Cub Cards.
Compliment ChartEach classroom has a Complment Chart. Every time the class earns a compliment from a faculy member, it is added to the chart. When the chart is full (20 compliments), the class will have a small celebration. More information on these celebrations will be sent home as they are earned. |
